Reuters: US does not want to continue START negotiations with Russia until inspections resume

The US administration is not going to negotiate a START treaty with Russia until the parties begin inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons facilities, Reuters reports, citing representatives of the US National Security Council and the State Department.
In March 2020, the United States and Russia agreed to stop inspections of each other’s strategic nuclear facilities in connection with the coronavirus pandemic. Over the past year, negotiations to resume inspections have not yet resulted in agreements amid tensions over the situation in Ukraine.
According to an email from a National Security official obtained by the agency, the first step should be to resume inspections under the new START treaty. He referred to the START III treaty, signed by the parties in 2010, and stressed that “we are trying to work with the Russians in this direction.”
A State Department spokesman said the same in a separate letter.
