Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi is preparing to submit to the UN Security Council a draft document on the protection of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). On Friday, May 12, according to Reuters.
According to the agency, the draft agreement will be submitted to the UN Security Council by the end of May.
A Reuters source said the document “looks promising.” In particular, it will provide for a ban on shelling the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant and the territory adjacent to the nuclear facility.
Earlier, Rafael Grossi expressed concern over what he said was an unpredictable and potentially dangerous situation around the ZNPP in light of the Ukrainian army’s preparations for a counteroffensive. The authorities of the Zaporozhye region did not rule out that APU will try to capture the station.
However, the head of the Ukrainian atomic energy agency Energoatom, Petr Kotin, rejected the possibility of capturing the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant during the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, he admitted that Kyiv will try to regain control over the ZNPPnot using force, but cutting the supply lines of the object, capturing Melitopol and interrupting the connection between the object and the Crimea.
