Reuters: Siemens is not involved in the inspection of the damaged Nord Stream turbine

It was planned to resume pumping on September 3, but Gazprom completely stopped the operation of the gas pipeline due to a malfunction found in the turbine during routine maintenance.

At Gazprom toldthat the operation of the gas pipeline was completely stopped after the maintenance of the gas compressor unit (GCU) Trent 60 at the Portovaya CS. When carrying out routine maintenance together with representatives Siemens the unit was found to be leaking oil at the terminals, cable connections and other places.

Gazprom then noted that Rostekhnadzor had warned the company that the identified malfunctions did not allow “to ensure safe trouble-free operation of the gas turbine engine”, and therefore it was necessary to suspend its operation.

Similar oil leaks were found earlier at several other GPUs, which are now also idle, as Siemens said that the elimination of leaks is possible only in a repair facility.

In mid-June, gas supplies through the pipeline decreased to 40%. This happened due to the fact that Siemens was unable to return the repaired turbine from Canada. The problem with the return of the turbine to Gazprom has more than once caused a reduction in gas supplies via Nord Stream. Already at the end of July, gas pumping was reduced by another 20%.

As a result of negotiations with Germany, Ottawa agreed to transfer all six turbines undergoing maintenance in Montreal to Gazprom and sent one of them to Germany. However, the turbine was never accepted by Gazprom due to legal uncertainty. In Germany, they say that the turbine is ready for shipment. In early August, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Russia could take her away at any time, all that was needed was her participation.
