Two people were able to break through from Russian territory to Finland through the barriers at the Nuijamaa checkpoint. It is located on the border with the Leningrad region. This was reported by Reuters with reference to a representative of the Finnish border service, Colonel Mika Ritkonen.
According to the officer, the Finns are now strengthening and improving barriers to avoid new incursions into their territory.
According to the agency, dozens of migrants arrived on Saturday afternoon at the Finnish checkpoints of Nuijamaa and Vaalimaa and, in sub-zero temperatures, lit fires behind barbed wire fences installed by border guards.
Finland has a common border with Russia with a length of more than 1,300 km, which is also the external border of the European Union. Recently, the Finnish government accused the Russian authorities of sending migrants to Finnish checkpoints in retaliation for the decision to expand military cooperation with the United States. About 300 asylum seekers arrived in Finland this week, mostly from Yemen, Somalia, Iraq and Syria. Due to the influx of people, the Finnish border guard closed four checkpoints on Friday night, which account for most of the traffic between Russia and Finland. The fifth checkpoint, Vartius, was also temporarily closed on Saturday.
