Renting apartments in Lviv has become more expensive than in Kyiv: away from the border

Ukrainians are ready to pay exorbitant prices for security

The hostilities in Ukraine have changed the apartment rental market: the farther from the border with Russia, the higher the cost of housing. The greatest demand is for real estate in Lviv and Uzhhorod. Kyiv gave these cities the title of the most expensive and popular city in Ukraine.

Against the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, fewer and fewer Ukrainians are seeking to buy an apartment. The construction of new houses in the country has practically stopped; offers in the secondary market are in demand. However, citizens prefer to postpone these purchases until better times. On the other hand, rental prices have skyrocketed, especially in cities where Russian missiles are the least likely to reach.

To rent a one-room apartment in Kyiv, on average, you will have to pay 10,000 hryvnias or 22,000 Russian rubles, according to analysts from the Bird apartment search application. The price of the same apartment in Lviv will cost 5,000 hryvnia more – 34,000 rubles.

You can find housing in Lviv even cheaper – at the price of Kyiv. But at best it will be a “grandmother’s” repair, at worst – dirty wallpaper, falling off tiles, and a sofa and a chair from furniture. In general, judging by the housing search sites, a good apartment can be rented for 18,000 hryvnias – 41,000 rubles.

Similar prices are in the most remote from Russia Transcarpathian region. You can rent a one-room apartment on average for 12-13 thousand hryvnias (29 thousand rubles). The price of a “kopeck piece” starts from 16,000 hryvnias – about 37,000 rubles.

In social networks, residents talk about the increased demand for rent after Russia annexed new territories. Refugees have gone to places they consider safer.

Now in the western regions there are hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Eastern part of Ukraine. While some citizens let them into their homes for free, others do not miss the opportunity to earn money. So, at the very beginning of hostilities, prices in the same Lvov reached $3,000 per month. The situation was partly influenced by the refugees themselves, who were ready to pay apartment owners more than the real price in order to get a roof over their heads as soon as possible. This is where the law of supply and demand comes into play.

However, those who do not have money for expensive rent have other options. In Lvov, for example, the authorities set up modular camps to accommodate as many people as possible. Funds for their installation were allocated by Poland.

In telegram channels, you can find information that conflicts periodically flare up between local residents and those who came from the Eastern part of the country. For example, on May 28, residents of Kharkiv in Lviv allegedly reacted negatively to the words “Glory to Ukraine!”. The skirmish escalated into a fight, several people were hospitalized. At the same time, the Ukrainian media publish stories of residents who let visitors into their homes for free and try to support them with all their might. However, apartment prices say otherwise.
