R-fon enters the market – Kommersant FM

Russian manufacturers presented their new smartphone. It is assembled from imported parts, but on its own operating system, ROSA Mobile. A new product called “R-fon” was presented by the scientific and technical center “ROSA” and the company “RuTEK”. The device has an AMOLED display with a diagonal of 6.7 inches and FullHD+ resolution, as well as a 50-megapixel main and 16-megapixel front cameras.
The new device must withstand even very active use, Dmitry Ivannikov, general director of the RuTEK company, said at the presentation: “We do not hide the fact that the phone is entirely made from imported components, but at the same time, installation of printed circuit boards, a full assembly cycle, testing, filling software, setting up radio frequency bands – all this is done in Russia, on the territory of the Republic of Mordovia.
We are confident that the phone will perform well in both business environments and personal use. It is built on a powerful 8-core MediaTek Helio G99 processor, created using 6-nanometer technology. To prevent the smartphone from slowing down, we equipped it with 8 GB of RAM, and the built-in permanent memory can be expanded up to 2 TB using an additional SD card.”
The producers of R-fon also emphasized that its sales will start next year, first on the corporate market. However, they did not indicate the specific price of the new product. In the summer of 2023, the media wrote that it would be approximately 40 thousand rubles.
But what prospects does R-fon have? And who can buy it first? IT expert Sergei Vilyanov believes that with the announced characteristics, the range of potential buyers for the gadget is not very large: “If we are talking about the corporate market, then first of all these are various services that use a smartphone as a working terminal. Based on this, the characteristics of the “R-background” are absolutely redundant. Neither a 50-megapixel camera, nor a Full HD+ screen, nor an AMOLED screen are needed for such tasks; they simply increase the price of the device.
If the cost of this smartphone is 40 thousand rubles, then the chances of commercial success are simply zero. A phone with such characteristics costs from 15 thousand rubles. up to 20 thousand rubles.
That is, for 40 thousand rubles. this smartphone can be bought by collectors or patriots of the Republic of Mordovia and Saransk.”
In the consumer market, R-fon is unlikely to have great prospects, but in the corporate segment, a new Russian smartphone on its own operating system may well occupy its niche, says MTS RED specialist Alexander Baulin:
“Is it possible to compare the R-fon with other Russian smartphones? No. Although foreign components are still used, the assembly is planned to be controlled in order to avoid vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers. In addition, a domestic OS is used.
As for the consumer market, it will be difficult for the gadget to compete with Android models. This smartphone will be more expensive and may not support custom Android applications. And most importantly, its feature lies in security, which the average person will not appreciate, but it is precisely this that is included in the price.
Therefore, its main application is in projects where high cyber security is needed.”
In Russia, before this, they have repeatedly tried to create a domestic smartphone. The project of a secure gadget for the public sector called “Taigaphone” was once developed by the Infowatch group. However, in the end it was closed in December 2019, and the company itself suffered a loss of 40 million rubles.
From 2013 to 2017, Rostec owned a blocking stake in Yota Devices, which developed YotaPhone. However, in June 2018, the state corporation sold the stake to Chinese investors.
