Yonhap: North Korea hasn’t answered South Korea’s military calls for three days
For the third day in a row, North Korean officials have not responded to South Korean attempts to reach them over the military line, the Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday.
The agency refers to South Korean officials whom it does not name.
It is reported that usually Pyongyang and Seoul call twice a day through two communication channels: through the military “hot line” and through the inter-Korean liaison office.
On Friday, Pyongyang officials stopped responding to Seoul’s attempts to contact them for unknown reasons.
The inter-Korean liaison office is closed on weekends, while Seoul tried to call the military hotline on Saturday and Sunday. But representatives of the DPRK did not respond to calls.
The agency notes that the reasons for Pyongyang’s “silence” are not clear, but now the situation on the Korean Peninsula is tense: Seoul, together with Washington, have resumed active military exercises, and North Korea, in response, is testing its weapons and regularly uses the topic of nuclear weapons in its statements.
Some experts believe that Pyongyang can thus, without answering calls, protest against Seoul’s pressure on the issue of human rights in the DPRK and the situation with the inconsistent use of buses from the Kaesong industrial complex.
However, in June 2022, there was no communication between the two countries due to malfunctions caused by heavy rains.
