Putin: there was no Ukraine as part of the Russian Empire

Ukraine was not part of the Russian Empire. Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled this at a meeting with members of the new Public Chamber of the Russian Federation on the eve of National Unity Day.
“All southern Russian lands were transferred during the formation of Soviet Ukraine during the creation of the USSR. There was no Ukraine as part of the Russian Empire – there were regions. In the 16th century, it itself consisted of three regions – Kyiv and the Kiev region, Zhitomir, Chernigov – that’s all,” the president explained.
According to Putin, the Ukrainian lands were simply part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and then voluntarily asked to be part of the Moscow kingdom, for which there is documentary evidence.
On May 23, at a meeting with the Chairman of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin, Putin already statedthat before the proclamation of the Ukrainian SSR in 1919 there was no Ukraine in the history of mankind. To the meeting with the president, Zorkin brought a copy of a 17th-century map compiled by French cartographers under Louis XIV. On this map, according to him, there is no Ukraine, but there is the edge of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the edge of Cossackia, as well as the Russian kingdom.
