The threat of nuclear war in the world is growing, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with members of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights.
“Such a threat is growing, to be honest. Regarding the fact that Russia under no circumstances will apply [ядерное оружие] the first – but if he does not apply the first, under any circumstances, then the second will not apply either. Because the possibilities of use in the event of a nuclear strike on our territory are very limited, ”said the head of state (quote according to TASS).
According to him, Russia’s nuclear strategy is set to be applied in the event of a retaliatory strike. “We have not transferred our nuclear weapons to anyone, and we are not transferring them, but we will protect our allies with all the means at our disposal,” the president confirmed, noting that there are US tactical nuclear weapons in Europe.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov has previously insisted that Moscow refuses to participate in nuclear rhetoric, which is actively supported by Western media. The Russian Foreign Ministry also called on the countries of the “nuclear five” to stop encouraging provocations. The Foreign Ministry stressed that Moscow strictly adheres to the postulate of the inadmissibility of a nuclear war, “in which there can be no winners.”
On November 30, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized the inadmissibility of any clash between states possessing nuclear weapons. “Russia’s position goes further: in addition to the inadmissibility of such a war, it is necessary to avoid any military clash between nuclear powers, even with the use of conventional weapons,” Lavrov said.
