The conversation between the heads of state took place at the initiative of the South African side, the Kremlin said. Ramaphosa thanked Putin for a “constructive conversation” about possible ways to resolve the situation in Ukraine during a meeting of leaders and representatives of several African states, which took place in St. Petersburg in June. It is expected that the African Peace Initiative will continue to be considered in conjunction with the Russia-Africa summit at the end of July, the report says.
Putin and Ramaphosa also agreed to hold a separate meeting at the summit, the President of South Africa spoke about preparations for the BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which will be held in Johannesburg at the end of August.
The BRICS summit will be held in South Africa from 22 to 24 August in person. Putin’s visit, despite being invited to the summit, is complicated by a March 17 arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov noted that Putin would make a decision on a trip to the summit “closer to the point”, and stressed that Russia “in any case will actively participate” in the work of the BRICS, because he considers “this is a very important association, relevance which is constantly rising.
