Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Vladimir Putin was informed about an attempt to break through saboteurs from Ukraine in the Belgorod region. He called the operation itself an attempt to divert attention from the Bakhmut direction.
“We perfectly understand the purpose of such sabotage — to divert attention from the Bakhmut direction, to minimize the political effect of the loss of Artemovsk by the Ukrainian side,” said Dmitry Peskov. He clarified that the Ministry of Defense, the FSB and the border service reported to the president about an attempt by a Ukrainian sabotage group to break into the Belgorod region.
“Work is underway to squeeze them out of Russian territory and destroy this sabotage group,” the Kremlin spokesman said. Mr. Peskov stressed that “there are enough forces and means on the spot.”
Earlier today Governor of the Belgorod Region Vyacheslav Gladkov informedthat a sabotage and reconnaissance group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine entered the territory of the Grayvoron district. The FSB and units of the Armed Forces of Russia and the National Guard entered into battle with them. An RT source reported that saboteurs seized the House of Culture in the village of Gora-Podil. Fighting in the village of Glotovo was also reported.
The GRU of Ukraine confirmed the sabotage operation. The speaker of the GUR, Andrei Yusov, said in a commentary to the Suspіlne Novini TV company that Russians formed from the Freedom of Russia Legion (recognized as terrorist and banned) and the Russian Volunteer Corps are participating in the operation. He stated that the purpose of this operation is “to create a security zone for Ukrainian citizens.” Both organizations also announced their participation in the fighting.
