During his visit to Kazan, President Vladimir Putin visited one of the new workshops of the Kazan Aviation Plant named after Gorbunov. He inspected four modernized Tu-160M strategic missile carriers.

Mr. Putin climbed into the cockpit of one of the military aircraft, took the helm, and spent about 10 minutes inside. Having learned that the missile carrier did not have a name, the president proposed naming it in honor of the first president of Tatarstan, Mintimer Shaimiev (held office in 1991–2010).

“We will call this missile carrier after Mintimer Shaimiev. This is a person who has done a lot not only for Tatarstan, but for all of Russia,” Vladimir Putin explained his initiative (quoted by Interfax).

The Tu-160 strategic bombers are part of the long-range aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces. These aircraft are part of the Russian nuclear triad, and they are also capable of delivering strikes, including cruise missiles.

President today, February 21, arrived to Kazan for the opening ceremony of the international tournament “Future Games”. The event will also be attended by the presidents of Belarus, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Republika Srpska.
