Russian President Vladimir Putin stated the need to increase the combat readiness and equipment of Russian border forces. Separately, he singled out the Black Sea region.

“We must further increase the combat capabilities of border agencies and the effectiveness of mobile groups. And not only on land, but also on sea routes. First of all, of course, this concerns the Black Sea today,” the president said at the Russian FSB board (quoted from TASS).

At the board meeting, Vladimir Putin also thanked the service employees for their work in the zone of military operation and countering saboteurs on the border with Ukraine. According to him, the FSB should continue its anti-corruption work, paying special attention to state defense orders and national projects. The importance of the FSB’s work lies in ensuring Russia’s sovereignty, the head of state added.

At the end of December 2023, Vladimir Putin signed a law that allows for compulsory military service in the FSB border service. In addition, the document allows the department to independently recruit volunteers and create formations from them following the example of the Ministry of Defense.
