Russian President Vladimir Putin held a working meeting with Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Ella Pamfilova. They talked about preparing for the September elections. The meeting took place in Sochi.
In the introductory part of the conversation, published on website Kremlin, Ella Pamfilova noted that the main task of the CEC is to “increase confidence” in the elections and the electoral system. According to her, this is the basis of “legitimacy” and “stability” in Russia.
Vladimir Putin said that Russia needed a “strong rear” in the form of a “reliable, democratic, developing political system.” “And the elections, I hope, will contribute to this, I have no doubt,” the president added.
“Despite all the current challenges, we still consistently defend our main principle – that elections should be held as openly and transparently as possible. I want to honestly say that this transparency and openness is an order of magnitude higher than in those unfriendly countries that consider themselves democratic. This is true,” said Ms. Pamfilova.
Photographs of the meeting released by the Kremlin show that the head of the CEC came to the meeting with the president with a Z-shaped brooch pinned to her jacket lapel.
On September 9-11, direct elections of heads of 14 regions, as well as deputies of six legislative assemblies of subjects and 12 representative bodies of regional capitals, will be held in Russia. In total, about 4,700 election campaigns will take place in Russia during this period.
