Putin launched the commissioning of a wintering complex at the Vostok station in Antarctica

President Vladimir Putin and President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko took part via video link in the opening ceremony of the new wintering complex of the Vostok station in Antarctica. Vladimir Putin gave the command to put the complex into trial operation, RIA Novosti reports.
“I am convinced that the new station will strengthen cooperation between scientists from different countries and will become an open platform for solving pressing problems in the field of studying nature and the environment,” said the Russian president (quoted by RIA Novosti). He noted that members of the 16th Belarusian and 69th Russian Antarctic expeditions are working “shoulder to shoulder” at the Vostok station.
The Vostok station was founded in 1957; it is located on the ice dome of Antarctica at an altitude of 3.5 thousand meters. The new wintering complex consists of five blocks with an area of about 3 thousand sq.m. It is designed to accommodate 15 people during the winter period, and 35 people during the seasonal period. The complex is the first modern building built at the Earth’s cold pole.
