President Vladimir Putin signed a law tightening penalties for violating the placement of biometric personal data. Repeat offenders will face a fine of up to 1.5 million rubles.
The law provides that for officials fines for illegal posting and updating of personal data will range from 100 thousand to 300 thousand rubles, for organizations – from 500 thousand to 1 million rubles. For collecting biometric data without consent, officials face a fine of 100 thousand to 300 thousand rubles, legal entities – from 300 thousand to 700 thousand rubles.
Among the authors of the draft law were State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, his deputy Irina Yarovaya, as well as the leaders of four political factions. The goal of the initiative was called “the protection of biometric personal data of citizens, as well as the prevention of administrative offenses.” The project was submitted to the State Duma in May, it passed third reading December 5.
