Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on awarding the 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade the honorary name “Guards”, such decree published on the Legal Information Portal.
“For mass heroism and courage, fortitude and courage shown by the personnel of the brigade in combat operations to protect the Fatherland and state interests in armed conflicts,” the document says.
Now this unit will have to be called the 53rd Guards Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.
By data website of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the 53rd anti-aircraft missile brigade was formed on October 1, 1967 on the basis of the 268th separate anti-aircraft missile regiment. In 1986, the brigade was re-equipped with the Buk air defense system. Since September 1, 2010, the unit has been performing combat missions as part of the Western Military District.
