Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed condolences on the death of the first president of Yakutia, Mikhail Nikolaev. Telegram published on the Kremlin website.
“The first president of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), he sincerely loved his native land, did a lot for its socio-economic development, preserving the original traditions and customs of fellow countrymen, improving their quality of life,” the message says.
The President also noted the significance of Nikolaev’s contribution to “strengthening interethnic peace and harmony” in Russia.
On the death of the first president of Yakutia at the age of 86 informed August 5, the current head of the republic, Aisen Nikolaev. He did not report the cause of death. The authorities of the republic declared mourning from 5 to 8 August.
Mikhail Nikolaev was born on November 13, 1937 in the Oktemsky nasleg of the Ordzhonikidzevsky district of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. He graduated from the Omsk State Veterinary Institute, as well as the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the CPSU. In the period from 1985 to 1989, Nikolaev served as secretary of the regional committee of the CPSU of Yakutia. In 1991 he was elected the first president of the republic. Nikolaev was the head of Yakutia until 2002, after which he moved to work in the Federation Council. Also, Nikolaev was a member of the State Duma of the VI convocation. Since 2016, he has been the State Councilor of Yakutia.
