Putin expects new energy consumption record due to economic growth

President Vladimir Putin spoke at the plenary session of Russian Energy Week. He said that energy consumption in Russia could reach a record this year amid economic growth. The previous record was set in 2022.
“Last year, Russia recorded a record amount of energy consumption. And there is reason to believe that this year it will be updated,” said Vladimir Putin (quoted by TASS). The president called ensuring the domestic market as Russia’s basic priority in the energy sector.
Deputy Minister of Energy Yevgeny Grabchak said that since the beginning of 2023, energy consumption has increased by 1.2%, and without taking into account temperatures – by 0.86%. In 2022, electricity consumption increased by 1.5%, to 1123.6 billion kWh.
In June, ACRA agency published study on industrial energy consumption in the regions. Since June 2022, compared to 2021, electricity consumption has dropped by 0.5–1 billion kWh per month (a decline of 2–4%) and has not recovered in 2023.
At the same time, the regional dynamics of energy consumption, according to ACRA, is heterogeneous: a strong decline was recorded in 2022 in regions with a high share of processing against the background of a decrease in the load on energy-intensive industries.
