Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Xi Jinping on his re-election as President of China for the third time. Telegram published on the Kremlin website.
“The decision of the National People’s Congress of China is a testament to the recognition of your merits as the head of state, as well as broad support for your course towards the further socio-economic development of China and the protection of national interests on the world stage,” the document says.
Putin also noted Xi Jinping’s contribution to strengthening the strategic cooperation between Russia and China. The Russian leader expressed hope that cooperation between the two countries would expand “in various areas.” In conclusion, Putin wished the President of the People’s Republic of China “new successes in his state activities.”
Earlier today, deputies of the National People’s Congress unanimously voted Xi Jinping for the presidency of China. He became the first leader in Chinese history to be re-elected for a third term.
Xi Jinping took the post of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 2012, the next year he was elected Chairman of the PRC and, accordingly, Chairman of the Central Military Council (CMC) of the country. In 2018, his candidacy was approved for a new five-year term. In the same year, the PRC lifted the restriction according to which the President of the PRC could only hold office for two terms.
