Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated military personnel, employees and civilian personnel on National Guard Troops Day. He noted the importance of the Russian Guard in the fight against terrorism, extremism and the protection of strategic facilities in Russia.

“I would especially like to note our comrades who are serving in the Donbass and Novorossiya, in areas located in close proximity to the combat zone,” Mr. Putin said in an address published on website Kremlin.

The President noted that, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, the Russian Guard ensured security during election campaigns for the presidential elections in Russia, and acted “clearly and harmoniously” at major events, including the “Games of the Future” and the “World Youth Festival.”

Vladimir Putin announced the creation of the Federal Service of National Guard Troops, which was later renamed the Russian Guard, in April 2016. The structure was created on the basis of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
