At the beginning of the meeting with members of the Public Chamber of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Russians on the upcoming National Unity Day.
“This holiday is dedicated to events that occurred relatively recently – some 400-odd years ago. <...> “It’s only five or six generations, but how many events have happened in the history of our country during this time, and at all its turning points, the unity of the people has always been a key component of Russia’s emergence to new frontiers,” said He.
Putin turned to the history of Russia, recalling the events of the 13th century, when Prince Alexander Nevsky visited the Horde to receive a label to reign. According to the president, Nevsky did this “primarily in order to effectively resist the invasion of the West,” as well as for the sake of preserving the culture and traditions of the people.
The head of state noted that with the destruction of culture, the people gradually begin to “disappear as an ethnic group, dissolve like snow in late spring.” Much the same thing is happening today in the context of protecting history, language, culture and values in Donbass and Novorossiya, Putin added. “This is the key to the events taking place today,” the president concluded.
National Unity Day is celebrated annually in Russia on November 4th. This year, the weekend has been declared from November 4 to 6, Rostrud recalled. The holiday was established in 2004 and was first celebrated in 2005. The date of National Unity Day is dedicated to the events of 1612, when the people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from Polish invaders.
On November 4, Putin, according to tradition, will lay flowers at the monument to Minin and Pozharsky on Red Square, reported previously in the Kremlin.
