Putin told how Clinton changed his mind about Russia joining NATO
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin during an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson shared a story about a meeting with former US President Bill Clinton in the Kremlin in the early 2000s, where the possibility of Russia joining NATO was discussed.
According to Putin, negotiations with Clinton took place in the “next room” from where they are sitting now. “I asked him, ‘Bill, if Russia expressed a desire to join NATO, do you think it would be possible?’” the president recounted the conversation. According to him, to which Clinton replied: “Yes, I think.”
However, during dinner, Clinton changed his mind: “I talked to my team, and no, it’s not possible right now.” Putin noted that the former US president can confirm this. If the answer were positive, then Russia would begin to prepare to join the alliance. However, such an outcome did not happen.
Putin also noted that Russia realized that it was not welcome in NATO, but continued to strive to strengthen relations with the countries of the bloc. Putin’s meeting with Clinton took place on June 3, 2000, their dialogue took place in a one-on-one format, followed by an informal dinner. Putin also told director Oliver Stone about these negotiations in 2017.
