Putin assigned the name “Guards” to the 5th Combined Arms Army – Kommersant


President Vladimir Putin assigned the name “Guards” to the fifth combined arms Red Banner Army of the Order of Zhukov. According to decreethe title was awarded for “mass heroism and courage.”

The 5th Red Banner Army (also known as military unit No. 06426) is part of the Eastern Military District. Its headquarters is located in Ussuriysk. The army commander is Major General Ivan Eruslanov. It was first formed in 1918 and then disbanded in 1924. Then it was re-formed in 1939 in the Kiev Special Military District.

The 5th Red Banner Army received the Order of the Red Banner on February 22, 1968 for heroism and courage shown during the Great Patriotic War. In 2021, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu handed over Army Order of Zhukov “for services to ensuring security and strengthening the defense capability of the state.”
