Putin: art should remain out of politics

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, May 2, personally congratulated the director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev on his anniversary. The artist is 70 years old.
During the meeting, the head of state thanked Gergiev for everything he had done for Russian and world art, primarily music, but also for Russian culture in general. Putin stressed that during the leadership of Gergiev, the Mariinsky Theater has become a truly world stage of the highest level and an example to follow for many creative teams.
Putin said that he did not want to talk about the current situation in the world, but, on the contrary, he wanted to emphasize that art is outside politics. At the same time, the president noted Gergiev’s position regarding his Motherland, the Kremlin’s press service reports.
Earlier it became known that on May 2, Putin signed a decree on awarding the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree, artistic director and director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev. The artist, celebrating his 70th birthday on this day, was awarded a high award for his great contribution to the development of national culture and art, and many years of fruitful activity.
The press secretary of the head of state, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that Putin’s work schedule during his work in St. Petersburg included several meetings, including with Gergiev, whom the president wants to congratulate personally.
