Putin Appoints Soltanovsky, Ex-President to the Council of Europe, as New Ambassador to the Vatican

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Ivan Soltanovsky, the former Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, as the new Russian Ambassador to the Vatican. The decree to this effect was published on the portal of legal information.
“To appoint Ivan Dmitrievich Soltanovsky Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Vatican,” says in the document.
By another decree, Putin stripped off from the position of the Russian ambassador to the Vatican, Alexander Avdeev, who has worked in this post since 2013. He was also relieved of his duties as the representative of the Russian Federation to the Order of Malta, follows from the decree.
Ivan Soltanovsky is 68 years old. In 1977 he graduated from MGIMO. After graduating from the university, in different years the diplomat worked in the South Asia Department of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, consulates general and embassies of the USSR and the Russian Federation in Pakistan and India, and later in the Russian Foreign Ministry.
From 2003 to 2009, he served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to NATO in Brussels. Then he worked in the department of pan-European cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry. In 2015, he became the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, replacing Alexander Alekseev in this post.
Putin stripped off Soltanovsky from the post of Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe in November 2022, since Russia announced its withdrawal from the organization earlier in March. 16 March Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe accepted decision on the immediate exclusion of Russia.
