Putin and Aliyev discussed the situation in the South Caucasus

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. About it informs Kremlin.
It is noted that the leaders discussed the further development of trade and economic cooperation, including the implementation of projects in the field of energy and transport.
In addition, the presidents spoke about the situation in the South Caucasus region. Putin and Aliyev touched upon the issue of ensuring stability and security on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. It is emphasized that the intention to fulfill the agreements between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia was confirmed.
The last time Putin spoke with Aliyev was on December 24, 2022. Then the Russian leader congratulated Aliyev on his birthday. The Presidents discussed the implementation of the trilateral agreements between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia related to ensuring security on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.
January 31 Putin also communicated with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The telephone conversations took place on the initiative of the Armenian side. The Kremlin reported that the country’s leaders discussed the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh and the importance of implementing trilateral agreements.
On December 12, 2022, Azerbaijan blocked the Stepanakert-Goris highway in the Lachin corridor. This is the only road that connects Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. According to Yerevan, due to the blockage of the corridor, there was a shortage of essential goods, food and medicine.
Ten days after blocking the corridor, Pashinyan criticized the actions of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh, saying that the mission was not fulfilling its obligations. In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Kremlin noted that the peacekeepers are doing everything possible to ensure order in Karabakh.
In January, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged his Azerbaijani colleague Jeyhun Bayramov to unblock the track.
