Putin agreed with Korney Chukovsky in assessing the personality of Rasul Gamzatov

Vladimir Putin performed at a gala concert dedicated to the centenary of Rasul Gamzatov. He admitted that he was grateful to fate for meeting the great poet and man, for the opportunity to listen to his “imaginative, truly rich folk speech” and admire the depth of his thoughts and filigree sense of humor. Putin recalled how, at the celebration of Gamzatov’s 80th birthday, the birthday boy said that he treated anniversaries with irony, since anniversaries, in his opinion, “are an exaggeration of merit.”
However, Putin himself considers the assessment of Korney Chukovsky fair, who called Gamzatov an “inquisitive sage” who tried to understand the meaning of things. “This is the most accurate description,” the president said. In his opinion, Gamzatov’s work is a “textbook of life” in which “you can find answers to the most difficult questions.”
The president believes that Gamzatov’s poems about the war “inspire us even today,” “when the fate of Russia is being decided,” and the Russian people “protect everything that is dear to us.”
He also reminded the audience of the words of Gamzatov, who said that a man should be prompted to action by two reasons: love for a woman and love for his native land.
