The Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) is ready to start holding a referendum on joining Russia, but first you need to wait for the allied forces to reach the borders of the republic, the head of the region, Denis Pushilin, told Soloviev Live.
“We are organizationally ready for the referendum, as in recent years we have learned to work in critical and difficult conditions. That’s all right. The main thing now, what we are waiting for is the exit of the allied forces to the administrative borders of the republic, ”the head of the DPR answered the question about the possible timing of the referendum (quote according to TASS).
The day before, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz declaredthat Western countries will “never recognize” the results of any referendum or other attempts to separate the territories of Ukraine from Russia. The West will continue to put sanctions pressure on Moscow, he added during a speech at the Crimean Platform international summit organized by Ukraine.
At the end of March, the head of the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) declaredthat a referendum on the entry of the republic into Russia could be held in the “near future”. In early June, the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov saidthat the possibility of holding a referendum in the near future is impossible due to the constant shelling of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Peskov noted that it is necessary to create appropriate conditions for the referendum.
June 7 Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Matvienko saidthat the Federation Council is ready to consider applications for the accession of the DNR, LNR, as well as other territories to Russia. On July 15, a headquarters was created in the LPR to prepare a referendum on joining Russia.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the independence of the DPR and LPR, and on February 24, Russia launched a military operation in the Donbass and Ukraine. Putin called the protection of the population of Donbass, as well as the denazification and demilitarization of Ukraine, its goal.
