Programmers told how an inexperienced person can start earning from 70 thousand rubles

The idea to “drop everything and go to IT” is gaining more and more popularity in Russia every year: some are joking, while others are seriously thinking about such a change of profession on maternity leave or in retirement. For those who decide to try their hand at programming, there are many “quick” online courses: tuition prices start at 18 thousand rubles (this is how much it costs, for example, to learn how to design websites) and reach 150–200 thousand for a full immersion in Python, HTML, CSS and more. Results are promised within 3 months. However, all is not so rosy. Experienced specialists in the IT sphere told MK: you can learn, but this is not enough to make a dizzying career.

A typical ad looks something like this: “Profession web developer. You will learn how to create full-fledged websites and web applications from scratch. Master HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP, get familiar with frameworks and become a sought-after web developer. Even if you haven’t programmed before.” The following is an explanation: a web developer creates websites, services and applications, develops online stores, online banks, search engines, cards and email clients, designs the appearance of the site and programs the service part. The cost of training is 240 thousand rubles for 9 months. Students are promised help in finding employment.

Future students are lured by allegedly high demand in the market: they say, the account for open vacancies goes into the thousands, employers need specialists, and they are ready to pay. At the same time, the entry threshold for web development is quite low. This profession allows you to work in international teams from anywhere in the world… in a word, a dream, not a job! But is everything really so rosy? Nadezhda R., who worked for several years as an IT specialist at one of the largest Russian banks, shared her thoughts with the MK correspondent.

– If it’s not something like JavaScript and another “front”, that is, there are enough simple things, it’s unrealistic to enter the profession, unless someone takes it as a completely newbie. Finding such a place is the most difficult thing; entering the profession in general is half the battle. But if you already have some experience, then learning an additional language in 2-3 months is real. But it is almost impossible to put the brains in place for the thinking of a programmer, – explains the interlocutor of MK. Age is absolutely irrelevant here! And the grades in mathematics that once were in school are also not important. Much more important is how actively you used your brain during your life. You can learn programming at least at a basic level even at the age of 70-80, if you have been engaged in intellectual work before. Well, if you were a loader, then if you at least solved crossword puzzles in the evenings! Programming is not mathematics, as many people think, it is rather the ability to think rationally and build logical chains. Understand: if I want to achieve the goal, then I need to take such and such steps. This is easy to learn.

What courses are we talking about? The description of one of the programs (756 hours of training and about 150 thousand rubles of payment) says that JavaScript and PHP are in the top 10 popular programming languages, according to the TIOBE index in August 2021. JavaScript is used everywhere and has been the most widely used programming language for many years. The main and most popular Internet sites are made on it. The descriptions clarify: these courses may be suitable for those who suddenly thought about changing their profession and have never been a specialist in mathematics. For example, for people on the verge of retirement or for women who are going on maternity leave.

The interlocutor of MK also noted that those courses that promise results in just 3 months still do not inspire confidence – they can be suitable either for those who just want to refresh old knowledge, or for the most superficial understanding of the topic. But in six months or a year it is quite possible to master a new specialty, the main thing is to follow the instructions clearly.

– Most likely, the courses are designed for 3-6 months of heavy workload, or they will not give enough skills for the profession. It’s no secret that many people scold additional education just because they themselves do not know how to study. Not ready to do homework, skip classes, etc. So nothing will work. But a year of thoughtful study will give you a chance to qualify for a salary of more than 70 thousand rubles. There are a lot of vacancies on the market now and a great demand for specialists of even a basic level,” Nadezhda R. confidently predicts.

Key skills that are promised at a basic level are web page layout: HTML, CSS, responsive and mobile layout, working on GitHub, solving problems using JavaScript, creating interactive web pages, and much more. Whether this is a lot or a little, professionals find it difficult to say: it all depends on the tasks that the student sets for himself.

Another specialist in the field of programming, mobile application designer Snezhana M., told MK that she herself managed to master a new profession thanks to short-term courses.

– We were promised assistance in finding a job, they really asked for a resume and then sent offers. The market demand for developers is very high, there are not enough of them, and even not very literate guys are snapped up. In general, such courses provide information, give an understanding of where and how to dig, but you still have to act on your own. You will not be led into a new profession by the hand, only a navigator will be given. Therefore, I can say this: if you are focused and ready to work hard, then the courses can give you a starting point. Magic, of course, will not. And, of course, you should not bet heavily on online learning if you do not have the appropriate skill. Personal communication will not replace anything.

The interlocutor of “MK” also added that the need for programmers is high, but still not for “juniors”, but for more experienced people. Moreover, there is an opposite effect here: there are many applicants, they find a place for themselves, and even quite willingly snap them up, but the market is gradually flooded with not very high-quality specialists.

“It’s not exactly an easy path and easy money. Well, plus the sphere is very intellectually capacious, whatever one may say. It really takes a lot of brains to do it,” Snezhana added.
