Dmitry Danilov, head of the European Security Department at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor at MGIMO of the Russian Foreign Ministry, suggested that NATO’s spring exercises in Romania may be associated with a possible escalation in Transnistria. Earlier, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said that these exercises will test the transformation of a combat group into a brigade.
“It is quite natural that Romania raises the profile of issues within NATO,” the expert said.
He noted that this is due to the need to ensure security in the event of an escalation of conflicts on the southeastern flank of NATO.
Danilov admitted that deployment scenarios would be worked out in the event of destabilization in Moldova. According to him, the West is also very worried about the warehouses with Soviet ammunition in Kolbasna in Transnistria.
The expert stressed that these issues make Russia think in terms of increased risks, including regional ones.
