You have to make choices, take what is strictly necessary, pack your things as much as possible to increase your chances of having nothing to throw overboard if the boat rocks. He leaves his bottle of perfume, no time to smell good, to look good, to play the seducer. The zipper pulls a little… but there’s enough to last a few days: two, three briefs, T-shirts, a pair of trainers.
In a few hours, Jamil will fly to Turkey, from where he will secretly board a tub for Greece before rolling on to Stockholm. A hundred kilometers from him, his brother Milad gave his last music lesson in Damascus. He too dreams of a better life in a city abroad that is less left to chance than his own. He thought of Berlin. This is where he wants to fill the concert halls and make a rockstar destiny for himself. We are in 2015, Syria is not coming out of the war.
Documentaries on migrants recount the political and social nightmare that people are fleeing, attaching themselves to their journeys and walking with them through the skein of the first administrative formalities. far from home add to that something special. It’s a family film: Wissam Tanios follows his cousins Jamil and Milad Khawam for five years as he would keep their diary. From the desire to trace their route far from home to the construction of their new existence, the journey thickens with the loneliness of those who start from scratch.

When the distance makes filming impossible, Tanios abandons his camera and asks the two brothers to take over with their cell phones. It also records images of their conversations on the Internet. This new cinematographic material has the immediate effect of making us feel the rupture between those who stay and those who leave. Jamil and Milad become the primary fiction of what Wissam is not – an exile.
