Prime Minister of Italy announced her readiness to act as a guarantor of a peace treaty in Ukraine

Italy is ready to act as a guarantor of a peace agreement on Ukraine, Prime Minister George Meloni said during a press conference.

“Italy is ready to act as a guarantor of the peace process, so I intend to visit Kyiv until February 24 [2023 г.]”, – she said (quote according to TASS).

Meloni also called for “concrete” work on a peaceful settlement of the situation in Ukraine. She added that interest in this is needed from both sides. However, according to her, now there are no signs of readiness for negotiations.

At the same time, the Italian prime minister said that earlier in a conversation with her, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced “initiatives in this direction.”

On December 23, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s team is finalizing the details of a plan for a peaceful settlement of the conflict, which consists of ten points. According to the publication, the proposals being developed may be submitted in February 2023. The Kremlin said that information about the “peace plan” has not yet been received.

On December 26, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba proposed holding a kind of “peace summit” at the UN site at the end of February. At the UN reportedthat the Secretary General of the world organization, António Guterres, is ready to mediate during the negotiations, if all parties agree to this. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat Russia will not follow the conditions of Ukraine, since Moscow is guided only by its own goals and common sense.

The day before, December 28, Peskov clarifiedthat “no peace plan can exist” without taking into account the entry into the Russian Federation of four new regions.

Since the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the parties have held talks several times in February and March, mediated by Turkey. The previous meeting of representatives of Russia and Ukraine took place on March 29 in Istanbul, after which the process was frozen. The Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that they are still open to negotiations, while in Ukraine they passed a law that prohibits negotiations with Moscow.
