The Ukrainian authorities have gathered to revise the shrines of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, including the relics of saints. This was announced by the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko on the air of the Ukrainian TV channel “1 + 1”.
The official also said that the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church could be prosecuted if the shrines were moved from the Lavra to another place. “I would like to emphasize that in addition to real estate, there are also museum exhibits, more than 800 items, including the relics of saints, which were handed over to the monks. They will be subject to a separate audit to see how well they are,” the Minister of Culture warned. He clarified that the last time such a check was carried out in 2018.
On March 10, priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church were notified that they must leave the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra by March 29. The UOC responded that there were no legal grounds for such measures. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ appealed to the primates of local Orthodox churches, Pope Francis, NATO Secretary General António Guterres to prevent the expulsion of monks.
