President of Uzbekistan Mirziyoyev voted in a referendum on updating the Constitution

A referendum on constitutional reform in a new edition has started in Uzbekistan. Big changes are expected in the country: the current Constitution, adopted back in 1992, can be seriously improved and changed by more than half. In her draft, the number of articles and norms will significantly increase: from 128 to 155, and from 275 to 434, respectively. The changes will affect almost all spheres of life – from the work of the legal profession and the judiciary, to the social sphere and the work of the media, but the final word still remains with the people: the reform will be approved if it receives the support of more than half of the voters.

From 8 am, more than 10,000 polling stations across the country opened their doors to those wishing to vote. More than 19 million citizens of Uzbekistan will be able to take part in the referendum, making their choice available, including from Russia – voting places are also equipped in large cities. It is reported that by 11 o’clock in the afternoon (local time) more than 6 million people had already voted.

The President of the Republic Shavkat Mirziyoyev also gave his vote. Together with his family, he visited the 59th polling station in the Mirzo-Ulugbek district of Tashkent and voted in the referendum.

There is a close connection between the polling stations and full interaction is carried out. Video cameras are installed at each site to record the process. According to the press center of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan, no information about serious offenses has been received so far. The voting process is monitored by representatives of international organizations and political parties, as well as local observers. Numerous foreign journalists also cover the voting process.
