Portuguese PM says EU unable to admit new members

The European Union is currently unable to meet the expectations of other countries and accept them into its membership, Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa said.
He noted that the issue of EU enlargement is dramatic in relation to Ukraine and a number of other countries. These countries harbored hopes “because of the many promises that the European Union has made over the years.” The EU has clear criteria for admitting new countries, but no criteria for determining its ability to host these countries, Costa stressed.
“Let’s be frank, given the current institutional and budgetary arrangement, the EU is not in a position to live up to the expectations it creates,” he said at a conference organized by CNN Portugal.
He added that because of the broken promises, the EU could face “huge drama in the short term.” However, there are also positives to be found, as it pushes the EU towards deep internal reform.
