Pompeo spoke about the threat to the United States against the backdrop of the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan

US President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan led to a significant risk of a repeat of the September 11, 2001 attacks, declared former United States Secretary of State and former CIA chief Mike Pompeo in an interview with Cats Roundtable radio.

“We are more likely to be attacked, as was the case in New York 20 years ago. A year has passed since everyone saw with their own eyes that the Americans are behind. Thirteen Americans died. The Afghans clung to American planes when we fled this country with our tails between our legs,” Pompeo said (quote according to TASS).

The United States invaded Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, after a long armed conflict, the United States forces were withdrawn from the country in August 2021. After the withdrawal of American troops from the country, representatives of the terrorist organization Taliban, banned in Russia, came to power in Afghanistan. The new authorities introduced strict Sharia law, most of which affected women. For example, the latter were banned from working with men, playing sports and teaching members of the opposite sex, and girls from going to school.

After the withdrawal of troops, three Republican congressmen introduced a bill to investigate the circumstances of the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. Congressmen, among other things, demanded to find out why US military equipment worth billions of dollars ended up at the disposal of the Taliban representatives and how effective the campaign to evacuate American and allied personnel from Afghanistan was. In October 2021, Politico, citing departmental and congressional sources reportedthat the US State Department launched an investigation into the actions of the Biden administration related to the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

In June 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin following talks with Turkmen leader Serdar Berdimuhamedov declaredthat the United States and its coalition allies should assume the main obligations and expenses for the post-conflict reconstruction of Afghanistan.
