According to the newspaper, the package includes 60 AGM-84L Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles and 100 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder tactical air-to-air missiles. Also, $655.4 million will go to extend the contract for radar stations.
It is noted that the initiative is at an early stage of consideration. When US President Joe Biden intends to address Congress, it is not specified. The press service of the State Department declined to comment on information about the impending request.
According to the newspaper, Congress is likely to approve the sale, but the process could be delayed, as the vacation of lawmakers will end only next week.
Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, has already commented on the information about the sale of weapons to Taiwan. He said such actions violate the “one China” principle and increase tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
