Politico: The State Department expressed concern about the intention to recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism”

The US State Department has signaled to Congress that it is concerned about the possible recognition of Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism.” About it informs Politico newspaper, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The publication notes that to date, the State Department has not spoken publicly for or against the measure proposed by Congress. They insist that the final decision rests with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

However, according to the newspaper, State Department officials have informed Congress that they fear negative consequences if Russia is recognized as a sponsor of terrorism. In particular, they are afraid that such a move would jeopardize the grain deal, which allows the export of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports.

In addition, obtaining this status by Russia would “virtually cut off” the United States from engaging in business relations with Moscow. Including we are talking about American private companies that are involved in the grain deal.

In late April, Anthony Blinken said that Washington was considering including Russia in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism. This status has already received Cuba, Iran, North Korea and Syria. In June, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged G-7 leaders to recognize Russia as a “sponsor of terrorism.” However, the initiative was not supported by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Nevertheless, the US Congress continues to promote this idea, bypassing the State Department. In July, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said that Congress intends to declare Russia a sponsor of terrorism if Blinken does not do so. Later, a resolution with the same appeal to the State Department was adopted by the US Senate, and a corresponding bill was submitted to the House of Representatives.
