Politico: The EU will discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia after the Catholic Easter

A new round of negotiations between the European Commission (EC) and EU ambassadors on the 11th package of sanctions against Russia is planned to be held after the Catholic Easter. About it informs Politico, citing three unnamed EU diplomats.
This year, Easter will take place on April 9th. At the end of March, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced new restrictions against Russia. “The 11th package of sanctions will be mainly aimed at combating the bypass of restrictions, at closing loopholes,” she specified (quote according to TASS). She did not specify the possible timing of its adoption.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against the Russian Federation, which affected many sectors of the economy, including energy, the high-tech sector, aviation, the banking industry, the mining industry, the automotive industry, etc.
Former head of the EC spokethat the EU’s goal is to “plunge the Russian economy into recession for decades.” At the same time, anti-Russian sanctions have been repeatedly criticized by the Hungarian authorities. Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that “sanctions failed” and pointed to economic problems in Europe, while Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared the ineffectiveness of restrictions.
The Russian authorities noted that the West’s expectations of economic sanctions did not materialize. During his address to the Federal Assembly on February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin declaredthat Western countries launched an “economic front” against Russia, tried to “collapse the ruble and provoke destructive inflation,” but the domestic economy turned out to be stronger than the West believed.
