Politico: Scholz is afraid that NATO will not protect Germany from Russia

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz decided to supply the Ukrainian army with Leopard 2 tanks, but refused to discuss the issue of providing the Kyiv regime with fighter jets, fearing a Russian response, writes Politico.
No sooner had Scholz agreed to send tanks to the armed forces of Ukraine than talks began about who, where and when will supply aviation equipment to Kyiv. And in this situation, as before, the German Chancellor was the first to “hit the brakes,” the authors of the publication shared their point of view. The German side urged not to hurry with new deliveries, repeating warnings about the danger of escalation and insisting that the Western military-political bloc NATO should not become a party to the conflict.
“Scholz is afraid not so much of an escalation of the conflict as of the fact that NATO and, in particular, the United States will not intervene if Russia takes retaliatory measures against Germany,” one of the advisers to the German government quotes the publication as saying.
According to him, this is the reason why the German chancellor insisted that Washington agree to supply the Ukrainian side with M1 Abrams tanks before Scholz lifts his veto on the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks.
The chancellor’s fears are explained by the fact that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, although it calls on members of the bloc to help each other in the event of an attack on a participating country, does not require the allies to respond with military force, the observers concluded.
