EU ambassadors failed to agree on the tenth package of sanctions against Russia due to disagreements over a ban on the import of synthetic rubber. About it informs Politico newspaper citing documents.
The publication notes that synthetic rubber is used to make tires. Italy and Germany are skeptical about the idea of banning the import of Russian rubber, while Poland supports the restriction. In 2021, the EU imported synthetic rubber from Russia worth about $700 million, Politico specifies.
EC President Ursula von der Leyen announced the tenth package of sanctions against Russia on 17 January. Then she noted that the restrictions will be aimed at correcting the shortcomings made in the development of previous packages. According to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, restrictions will enter into force on the anniversary of the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine – February 24.
The day before, February 15, Bloomberg wrotethat the EU intends to adopt the tenth package of sanctions as early as next week, without waiting for the anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine.
According to the publication, the new sanctions will also affect the banking sector. In particular, the “black list” may include Alfa Bank, Rosbank“Tinkoff bankand the National Welfare Fund. In addition, the EU wants to force European banks to report on the assets of the Central Bank.
