Emphasis in conflict may shift

Most experts agree that EU sanctions against Russia are damaging the European countries themselves. Against this background, political scientist Sergei Markelov believes that the energy confrontation between Russia and the EU countries may end by the end of this year.

In conversation with “Evening Moscow” Markelov explained that the confrontation will continue until the end of the year, as factors accumulate. After that, according to the expert, at some point, a point of no return will be reached, which is not in the dialogue today. As the expert noted, any of the parties at the moment can say anything.

Nevertheless, the political scientist predicts that the current situation may soon simply get bored with the population of European countries. Moreover, the absence of alternatives to Russian gas also plays a role in what is happening, Markelov specified.

The expert added that against the background of all this, the positions of the parties are likely to change. Markelov suggested that the focus of the conflict could shift, due to which the claims of Russia and Europe would also change, which, in turn, would lead to a settlement of the situation.
