International law expert, German professor Klaus Kress stated in interview publication Der Spiegel about Germany’s right to help Ukraine.
The expert was asked whether Germany becomes a party to the conflict by sending Ukraine such powerful weapons as Leopard tanks?
“The legal situation is clear: Germany is allowed to help Ukraine defend itself,” Klaus Kress said, adding that in fact Germany would be allowed to do even more.
“Based on the right to collective self-defense, Germany could directly intervene in the conflict together with Ukraine,” he explained in response to a clarifying question.
The expert also noted that Germany does not violate international law as long as Ukraine uses the weapons supplied to it for defense.
But if the German air force or tanks manned by German soldiers were deployed in Ukraine, then Germany would become a party to the conflict, Kress explained.
