Political analyst at the International Institute for Humanitarian and Political Studies Vladimir Bruter called Indonesia a potential ally of Russia and called for making relations with Indonesia a privileged topic for Russia.
“Indonesia is currently the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population,” Bruter noted in interview agency URA.RU.
He also recalled that recently the Indonesian ambassador said that Indonesia is considering the option of joining the BRICS. Bruter explained that the BRICS format is very interesting for such countries as Iran, Argentina, Indonesia, as it allows establishing priority relations with China.
And Indonesia, the expert continued, has tensions with China because the 1968 Indonesian coup d’état was anti-Chinese and many ethnic Chinese were victims of violence by right-wing nationalist Indonesian groups. Therefore, it is beneficial for Indonesia itself to have friendship with Russia and through the BRICS to restore relations with China.
