This was the last direct election of the governor of the region until 2017.

From July 2016 to October 2021 Dmitry Mironov was the governor of the Yaroslavl region. At the elections 2017 he won 79% of the vote. The reason for the early resignation of the governor was called the unsatisfactory results of the region in the elections to the State Duma, where United Russia won 29.72% of the vote.

October 12, 2021 Mikhail Evraev became acting governor of the region.
