Poland will extend the ban on grain imports from Ukraine regardless of the EU decision

Poland will unilaterally extend the ban on grain imports from Ukraine after September 15, unless the European Commission (EC) makes such a decision itself. This was announced by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
“The interests of the Polish farmer are most important to us. Either on Wednesday the commission will adopt a further ban on the import of grain, or we will extend it ourselves,” leads his words “Polish Radio”.
The prime minister emphasized that Warsaw says “no” to attempts to destabilize the Polish market, but supports maintaining the transit of supplies through Poland to third countries, the volumes of which increased by 31.5% year-on-year from May to July.
Earlier in July, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia signed a declaration according to which the ban on grain imports from Ukraine will be extended after September 15. Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Robert Telus then explained that the restriction on grain imports from Ukraine brought an “unexpected positive effect” in the form of an increase in transit volumes. In particular, if in March only 120,000 tons of wheat were sent through Poland to other countries, then after the introduction of an import ban in June – 260,000 tons.
On May 2, the European Commission banned the export of grain from Ukraine to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, but allowed its transit and export to the rest of the EU countries. In early June, the EC extended this ban until September 15.
