Poland will demand reparations from Germany through international courts

Warsaw intends to hold talks with Berlin on reparations for losses in World War II. Representatives of Israel will be invited to them, since half of the victims of the Nazis were of Jewish origin. At the same time, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki did not rule out appealing to international courts.

In his opinion, the equivalent of 6.2 trillion zlotys for Germany is not such a big amount.

“The budget of the entire Federal Republic of Germany, that is, the budget of the federal government together with the budget of the states, is almost as large,” Morawiecki calculated.

He stressed that Poland suffered more than other European countries during the war, but never received compensation. Therefore, Warsaw intends to address Berlin with a diplomatic note.

The prime minister said that in 1953 Poland refused to pay reparations to the GDR under pressure from the Soviet Union under the pretext that the Poles could not demand compensation for damage from the socialist “fraternal people.”

Morawiecki added that at that time no ratification documents were submitted to the UN, and modern Poland does not recognize the agreement.

“It is possible that at a later stage we will also turn our claims to international courts,” the Polish politician admitted. He promised to travel around the world with a report on Poland’s loss of human, moral and cultural values.
