Poland changes law to study Russian influence after US and EU criticism
The Polish authorities, after being condemned by the United States and the European Union, amended the project to analyze the influence of the Russian Federation, which, as you know, is directed towards the opposition. Euractiv writes about it.
According to the previous version of the project, diplomats who were “subjected to Russian influence” could have their right to hold public office related to the state budget and classified data for 10 years.
After the law was approved, the European Union filed a lawsuit against Warsaw, and Washington expressed concern that the law could be used to exclude opposition candidates. Faced with criticism, Polish leader Andrzej Duda made changes and signed the amended document.
According to the amendments to the draft, a person who is under the influence of the Russian Federation will be allowed to hold public office. Instead, the commission will be able to petition that the diplomat has succumbed to the influence of the Russian Federation and cannot be guaranteed to perform his duties properly.
