Poland stands for joint purchases of gas by EU countries

Poland has supported the initiative of joint purchases of gas from the European Union, but only on condition that they will be carried out on a voluntary basis, Szymon Shinkowski vel Senk, the representative of the Polish government for European affairs, said on Monday.
According to him, joint purchases may become a chance for a cheaper purchase of gas in the EU, but with the condition that they should be based on the principle of voluntariness. “No one should be forced to make these joint purchases,” the official said.
The representative of the Polish government noted that some countries have strong negotiating positions and contracts with favorable gas prices, so they cannot be forced to enter into negotiations with lower negotiating prospects.
As he explained, this also applies to Poland, which recently made several investments in the field of gas infrastructure, including the opening of an interconnector with Lithuania in May, an interconnector with Slovakia in August and the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline a month ago.
The data allowed us to consider that Poland is now one of the safest European countries from the point of view of gas security, and in this regard, the country has a relatively strong negotiating position, and they do not want to be bound by any binding mechanisms, Shinkowski vel Senk said.
